river tepe

Inspired by the building principles of the Canadian Inuit who passively acclimatized space with available resources, this project offers a warm repose for winter travelers along the Winnipeg River Trail. “River Tepe” is conceived as a simple aerodynamic form comprised of compacted snow and ice with circuitous interior spaces that transmit light while buffering arctic air. As residents approach the mound, they encounter the play of sunlight on its crystalline surface and the elongated carvings that lead visitors to the narrow winding passages inside. The configuration of interior zones is refined using simulation tools to minimize wind exposure while maximizing solar gain. The snow-ice composite allows light to enter into deep warming areas while the stillness of the snow-insulated air shelters inhabitants from the cold exterior climate. Modular construction using a demountable formwork facilitates access and material reuse while the snow-ice remnants will self-disassemble with the spring thaw.
